Sudhir Chadha
Shri Sudhir Chadha is a pioneering figure in Indian agriculture and horticulture whose vision, innovations, and grassroots engagement have transformed farming practices, empowered rural communities, and contributed significantly to India’s agricultural self-reliance. Born in Kaladhungi, near the Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve, his journey began in 1979 with the planting of just 40 papaya plants on his father’s farm. This modest experiment marked the beginning of a four-decade-long mission to introduce breakthrough technologies, improve productivity, and raise farmers’ incomes.
His first landmark achievement came in 1986 with the development of Farm Selection-1, a very dwarf, high-yielding papaya variety capable of producing up to one tonne of fruit per plant and nearly 500 kg of seed annually. To achieve this, Shri Chadha spent 15 years collecting papaya varieties from across India, crossbreeding them, and refining the traits for yield, disease resistance, and adaptability to subtropical climates. The result was a revolution in papaya cultivation, particularly in North India, turning papaya into a profitable and widely cultivated crop. This innovation earned him the title “Papaya Man” and the ICAR Innovative Farmers Award, presented by former Prime Minister Shri Chandra Shekhar.
